"Magic mushrooms," as they are often known

Have been linked to significant reductions in alcohol consumption  and even complete abstinence in heavy drinkers. 

Combining talk therapy for 12 weeks with two high doses of psilocybin, the hallucinogen found in psychedelic mushrooms. 

Significantly reduced heavy drinking  among heavy drinkers, according to research published in JAMA Psychiatry on Wednesday by the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

One of the hallmarks of alcoholism is the development of a tolerance to its effects. When alcoholics abruptly cut down on their consumption,

they also experience withdrawal symptoms. 

These men and women were randomly allocated to receive either two doses of psilocybin or two doses of a placebo antihistamine.
