After his "nightmare" US Open victory, Nick Kyrgios finds himself in an awkward situation.

The victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round of the US Open was described by Nick Kyrgios as "the most painful match of his career."

At the Australian Open earlier this year, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis catapulted to doubles fame by winning the competition.

Late on Monday night, the doubles partners and close friends had to square off for the first time.

Although Kyrgios entered the US Open as the 23rd seed despite making it all the way to the Wimbledon final last month, many anticipate him to have another barnstorming performance.

In order to launch his campaign, he wasted no time in eliminating Kokkinakis with a simple victory of 6-3 6-4 7-6.

He acknowledged, "[That was] probably one of the most uncomfortable games I've ever played."
